I saw several puppers decked out in winter coats and other gear as far as the summit of Mt. Pierce. I did not see any attempting to cross to Eisenhower and was glad not to. The trail was not fit for dogs. |

Crawford Cutoff to Mt. Clinton Rd, Crawford Path, Appalachian Trail, Mt. Eisenhower Loop
The trail as far as Mt. Pierce is fine. Underneath it's packed so firm that someone wearing only microspikes or bare boots will only scuff up an inch or two, no trouble for themselves of anyone else. They'll only sink if they step off the trail. As far as Pierce, snowshoes outperform microspikes/bare boots, but going without them is not a big deal. However, crossing to Eisenhower, there are two problems: 1) There are long stretches with ankle-, knee- and some hip-deep post holes. 2) The footprints don't follow the real trail, and that brings its own problems. I know the cairns are hard to find in the winter and I doubt I could have done any better breaking trail myself, but whoever breaks trail above the treeline and puts down footprints for the official way does us all a real service! |
