Comments: Great day on Thomas J! Started up only to discover three people beat me to the trail. Even though they broke trail I could not catch up. I am very grateful for them all as I’ve lost count of the number of times Ive broken Jewell and know the “fun” involved. I met one gentleman who was the first to break trail and even was able to get halfway up the alpine section of Jewell before he was spent and turned around. If I had an adult beverage on me I would have given it to him as a thanks, but we’ll have to settle with this post. He advised the couple behind him had continued on. That couple wound up breaking trail the entire way. If I could rent a hot tub truck to show up at the parking lot with a working hot tub in tow when they finished, I would have ordered that for them. However, rentable hot tub trucks aren’t a thing, so…While many broke out this section today, as is the case every winter, anything above treeline on Jewell typically fills in quickly and it looked mostly untouched on the return trip. The cairns on Jewell are still discernible from the surrounding landscape (yay!) but if you aren’t used to the path the trail takes, study up or go with someone who is. Everyone up there wore snowshoes from start to finish, even on Gulfside. There were a few sections where you are going over a couple bare rocks, but that’s the exception not the rule. Lots of drifts made everything look magical (my optimistic take on it). Coming back down the wooded section of jewell was lightening fast with the trail packed down. Waved to Richard and Heidi who were hiking on the south side of the Presi’s!
