Comments: A FINE weekend was had in the forest. A weekend you ask? Yes. It took two days to get Moriah. Yesterday (Saturday), Rhockin' Rhonda and I broke trail to the junction of Carter Moriah. It was rough going, but we did out best to lay out a great base. Rhockin' Rhonda had the poise of a ballerina while simultaneously the destructive power of a log truck out of control coming down from Gorham Heights while bustin'. She was like a snow plow. A sight to be seen. Like others have written, this was too tall a task for two trampers to tackle. Depths varied from 12-18" with higher drifts. We ran out of gas at the junction and called it a day. We set out today (sunday) with reinforcements. Little did we know, Random Group of Hikers had a hike today too, bringing thirteen sets of fresh legs - EVERY ONE OF WHICH HAD SNOWSHOES ON! We made quick work to C-M, in less than half the time of the day prior. The C-M ridge was rough broke last night by a pair, we cleaned that up and wholly agreed we made the correct choice of calling it a day. Stony is in SUPERB shape. Between yesterday and today, 26 people have hiked on it, ALL wearing snowshoes! A wild rarity. That cant be said for C-M from Bangor, that was beat the heck by barebooters from what we could tell. The trough is a thing of absolute beauty. You absolutely need snowshoes despite all the traffic. There is no moisture in the air so its packed out pretty well but without snowshoes you are going to rototill. There is about 24-36" of powder just off the trough. Ricked up to 93.1%... 40 left.
