 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I parked on the side of Man’s Hill Rd in Littleton near the start of the access road. It was widely plowed and no one seemed to care. The road was plowed well enough. There’s some hills on it so 2WD vehicles, make sure you’ve got enough momentum for them. Main roads were well plowed but still not great this morning due to lack of traffic but much better this afternoon. That said, there appears to be a long section of what I believe is black ice on the side of the road on Route 2, roughly between Appalachia and Lowe’s Store. Use caution. It wasn’t any better in the afternoon. |

Day 97, Peak 86. 2nd and last hike of the day. I was planning on Mt Misery and Towns Mtn as well but between a later start than I wanted and trail breaking taking even longer than I thought, it didn’t happen before I had to run home. Temps in the low teens and the sun was in and out.
The access road had been previously plowed it seemed to couldn’t have been much more than a half foot of new powder on it, if that (maybe 4-6 inches??). So that was “normal†trail breaking. Make sure to take the sharp right hand turn a short ways in and don’t continue straight on some other road. The real trail breaking began by the tower where I continued straight onto what looked like a road as the access road bent left for the final few dozen feet to the tower. I immediately began sinking in over a foot, often close to the top of my gaiter, just below my knee. Great powder, but very slow going. Total snow depth up there seemed to be around 2ft. This “road†immediately ended and I slabbed my way up, due west, toward the first bump, which I scootched just along the NE perimeter of the highest contour. I dipped down into an open minor col, took a bearing, then ascended again, roughly coming up in the narrow, minor col between the true summit and a small bump right next to it. From the col, I headed due north up the ridge to the highpoint. This was the only spot where I hit some spruce and a bit of thicker stuff right around the jar (so it was very short lived) but was the least steep way of getting there.
It took me 1hr20-25min to reach the summit, then 30min to get back to my car. That’s how deep the powder is. 2hr total time. About 1.75mi with 400ft of gain. Obviously some ups and downs along the way depending on how much you contour and skirt. 268 more days and 279 more peaks to go… |
