 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I parked on Broomstick Hill Rd NE of the peak where a snowmobile trail crosses it. I parked on the side of the widely plowed road and no one seemed to mind. The road is plowed well enough. 2WD vehicles just make sure you’ve got enough momentum to get up some of the hills. Driving there at 7am in the morning the roads were plowed but not great as they hadn’t seen much traffic. In the early-mid afternoon they were much better except some black ice in Route 2 around Appalachia and a few miles west of it towers Lowe’s store. |

Day 97, Peak 85. 1st hike of the day. Upper single digits for a start and cloudy though the sun occasionally came out to play. Little wind except one strong burst on my way down. I believe it was picking up throughout the day.
I walked S/SW on a snowmobile trail for about 1/2mi to the north end of the col between Farr Hill and an unnamed 1850-1875ft bump SW of it. Here, I turned right and began my bushwhack through mostly overgrown skidder roads. Trail breaking was pretty damn gruesome today even at low elevation. I was generally sinking to around the top of my gaiter just below my knee from the time I stepped off the snowmobile trail which is getting close to 1.5ft. I walked W/NW, picking up a minor ridge and following deer tracks so I wouldn’t sink as much ;) Once I picked up the ridge, it took me SW to just below the peak where I turned NW for my final ascent to the jar. Not a terribly straight line but 1) I followed the deer, 2) I followed a road for a ways that got me close, and 3) I followed the least steep path given the snow depth. Not too hard to find the jar and a little vantage point toward Parker Mtn and the Daltons I believe.
It took me about 1hr to make it up, say around 10min to sign in, which would mean 30min back down. Just under 2mi with about 550ft of gain. 268 more days and 280 more peaks to go… |
