Moat Mountain Trail from the South Moat trailhead out to the summit of North and back. The trail up to South has been well-traveled but wasn't a complete highway, especially in the final half mile or so near the top. Some ice here and there, but nothing bad. There are some diverging tracks where people cut corners/didn't follow recent trail re-routes, but for the most part the most packed out track is the right one. There was a single set of snowshoe tracks ahead of us between South and Middle, and from Middle to North we were breaking trail. The summits and more exposed ridge sections near Middle are windswept with minimal or iced-over snow. A few tricky spots to navigate in snowshoes between Middle and North, including one steep rock section where we created a short bypass to the east.
We were a group of 3, so there have been 6 sets of snowshoe tracks laid down between South to North now. Still highly recommend snowshoes on this portion - we met one barebooter as we were starting back from Middle to South, who was certainly still postholing despite our tracks. |
