Gorgeous day out, despite the low temps. Barely any wind at the summit. The trail is a packed highway (thanks, hardworking snowshoers!), but the snow is dry from all the cold and a bit loose. Totally fine for microspikes though. Going up is no problem, but it's not consolidated enough to give you good grip on the way down, so watch out for slippage and punching through the pack, postholing and twisting an ankle. When I was heading down, the trail had more minor postholes from stomping (guilty of a few myself) and a somewhat chewed up surface. Saw mostly microspikes today, I'd say 80% then 19% snowshoers, one skier (!) and one barebooter slipping (hope she did OK on the steep sections, if she even got to them). You can't do the loop at the summit unless you have snowshoes and want to deal with postholes, the fork right is not packed out and is mostly postholes. Sosman trail to the ski slope is not very well traveled either. |
