Comments
Comments: Initially was planning on Black Mountain Trail, but there is minimal room to park at the end of the plowed road and the road to the summer lot appears to require high clearance. Noting the other report today regarding the Black Mountain Trail and the benefits of snowshoes, the Chippewa Trail was a completely different experience. The lower trail is generally hardpack, with scattered sheets of ice on the logging road portion of the trail. On the steeper part of the trail, I would estimate there was less than 6 inches of snow and there were many exposed rocks and roots that would be challenging with snowshoes. On the summit ridge, the ledges are mostly bare. There were a few short areas of drifts, but probably no more than 8 inches deep, and areas of windblown hardpack, but I think snowshoes would need to be on and off repeatedly if used around the summit. I did set the first tracks to the east ledges going out along the ledges, but returning close to the trees on the north side of the ledges since I became concerned about potentially damaging vegetation on the bare ledges. Great views all around on a beautiful day!
