Trails
Trails: Moose Mountain Trail, Moose Mountain Shelter Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, January 22, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small parking area on Three Mile Road can fit 3-4 cars, maybe 5-6 if some of them are in a group and can park in front of each other. Parking area on Goose Pond Road can fit around 10 vehicles. Both lots were plowed, and the roads leading to them are nicely sanded and in good condition.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All totally frozen.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail was in good condition - white blazes were evident, no blowdowns (at least none above the snow), and all signs were in place. Moose Mountain Shelter Spur is unblazed, and thus very difficult to follow under the snow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I suppose. It was -10 degrees when we started the hike, so make sure your dog can handle cold like that.
Bugs
Bugs: Hahahahahahahahaha!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A black glove was hanging on a branch on the ascent up South Peak.

Comments
Comments: A very cold but clear and beautiful hike. Up to South Peak (from Three Mile Rd), the trail is packed out enough to bareboot, but isn't packed out fully and snowshoes would also work well. Past South Peak, snowshoes are definitely the best way to go, since the trail hasn't seen as much use and is definitely very soft and very easy to posthole in. Plus, large sections of the trail on and near the North Peak are Snowdrift City, making it very inadvisable to hike there without flotation. Microspikes wouldn't have been much help anywhere, since there was very little ice - just snow.

Moose Mountain Shelter Spur was not packed out at all, and it is unblazed, so we couldn't really tell where it went. The shelter is visible from the southern junction with the loop trail, so we could still visit it. I'm not entirely sure if we actually followed the shelter spur or just bushwhacked from the main trail to the shelter, but we made an effort to take the spur.

Really fun hike!
