100% NOT ready for spikes. It may look ok for the first mile or two, but trust me you will need your snow shoes.
The first two miles of 19MB are nicely packed. From there to the hut it needs more snowshoeing, but is well broken out. Carter-Moriah trail is another story. I broke trail through 12-18†of powder with drifts here and there up to my waist. That combined with the steep grade made for a long slog (3:20 to go 1.2 miles). I was so happy to see tracks at the summit, I almost cried. Someone else broke out the other side of the summit and Carter Dome trail, so the descent was fast.
FYI as of 9:30 am Wildcat Ridge Trail was untouched. |
