Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ammo was in better shape this morning but snow is coming. Fairly busy with about a dozen vehicles when I arrived just before 8am, another dozen added by 1pm, which is roughly half filled.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The two crossings on the lower Jewell have actual bridges.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is an impressively twisted large spruce to walk under not too far in on Jewell which has been there for a while. Higher up on Jewell there are three blowdowns in the tail but not totally blocking, as well as an easy duck-under. The Sphinx Col sign is lying down which didn't come as a suprise.

Comments
Comments: Surface conditions will be changing with tomorrow's snow. Jewell up to the link is packed under an inch or so of powder, then well packed to treeline. Many more hikers have come from the cog (half the tracks from Ammo are likely mine). There was some drifting above treeline but only short sections and not too deep. If off trail here you will post hole. Less drifting on Gulfside. I used Hillsounds all day but snowshoes are probably needed after tomorrow.

A balmy -14f start. Clear skies, winds on the ligher side of moderate and visibility of 100 miles. A great day to grid out January! Crossed paths with a few other friendly hikers including the one and only Larry B!
