Parked at the Ammo. One car there upon arrive, our two were the only ones when we returned. Lot is plowed but about an inche of snow on top and some ruts pulling in. 4WD, good ground clearance, snow tires; at least two out of three would be ideal. |

Saw a window of opportunity and we decided to take advantage, the forecast was low winds and above temps above zero. We both brought snowshoes and crampons but sharp Hillsounds did the job all day.
An inch or two of fresh powder on the trails. The Ammo had significant ice above the Gem Pool with picturesque frozen water falls and blue ice flows in the ravine. Mostly easy to ascend but would prefer full crampons and an axe in hand if decending this trail right now. Surface conditions above treeline was mostly solid windswept snow.
Upon breaking treeline visibility was poor, about 30-50ft. We took the "winter" approach to LOTC arriving on it's northern side. Winds gradually increased as we climbed Monroe, not overly gusty but steady and consistent 15-20mph. On the ascent to Washington we experienced increasing winds and decreasing visibility as elevation was gained, <25ft. at times. It was cairn-to-cairn from here on out. We came off the summit just winds were increasing (49mph via MWOBS). Considering the conditions we chose to forego Jefferson and just head down Jewell.
Overall a fun adventure in the alpine with good company. Only crossed paths with one other pair of hikers all day, Scott Benerofe (currently doing an AT SOBO thru hike!) and his freind Jeremy supporting.
My #46 and #47 for January.
