Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: With a FWD car without snow tires, Rogers Pond Rd I could get up when I had momentum, but when I came to the house with the no trespassing signs and such which I wasn’t expecting (I always seem to forget something in the trail reports I’ve read!) I stopped, then couldn’t get started or even get enough traction to turn around. So I had to carefully back down the hill and back into another plowed spot. Where the road starts that people use to begin their trek to the peak is also plowed, so there’s multiple options. Other than this final bit on the road, it’s not too steep. Back Lake Rd is suitable for all vehicles.

Comments
Comments: Day 67, Peak 61. 2nd hike of the day after Piper Hill in Colebrook. Cloudy and windy day with temps in the mid-high 20s.

From my car, I walked the short distance up the road to where the woods road people use to access the peak starts. I could’ve also parked there had my car not gotten stuck. I turned left onto this road, followed it to the red boundary marker on a tree that also had orange blaze, then turned right (north west) and bushwhacked up through open woods at a easy-moderate grade to the peak. The woods, other than perhaps, right at the road where I started whacking, were open. Very easy peak. I noted several deer yards around the summit. It’s been interesting to note all the deer signs this winter in southern NH where there’s less moose (thus more deer) and evidently in Pittsburgh too! Before this year, I very rarely saw deer or even signs of deer while hiking. Now I see lots! Must be the lower elevation. I signed in and returned the same way.

I used microbes the entire way just because I thought Rogers Pond Rd would be icy. There’s enough snow coverage that you shouldn’t dull them too much in the powder. Still minimal snow coverage of only 2-4 or maybe 3-5in. Not worth snowshoes in my opinion unless there’s a base underneath. 298 more days and 304 more peaks to go…
