Peaks
Peaks Mt. Carrigain, NH
Trails
Trails: Sawyer River Road, Signal Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, January 8, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot nicely plowed, Sawyer River Road obviously closed (albeit barely covered in snow).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: River is a little tricky; almost low enough to allow rock hopping, but still running fairly strong. Ended up taking the detour via the Notch Trail on the way up -- crossing on that side is a little more user friendly.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Few blowdowns on the middle of the ascent, nothing difficult.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Mine had a great day on the mountain. Beware, wet paws after the river crossing will immediately ice up and ball up w/ fresh, dry powder... Shortlegged doggos might struggle with the deeper drifts. Plenty of running water to be found along the way.
Bugs
Bugs: Not missed

Comments
Comments: This winter is just sad; barely any snow up there. Friday's "storm" dropped maybe an inch or two in the Whites. Barebooted up Sawyer River Road, then microspikes the rest of the way on a nicely packed but barely covered trail. Swapped out for snow shoes a few times when the drifts seem to indicate that things were getting real, but it turned out to be nothing more than drifts. There's a foot or two of soft drifts piled up on the exposed corners of the switchbacks, but everything was getting packed down nicely today with at least 7-8 hikers on the trail. Little to no ice to contend with, even on the exposed ridge. Mad props to the two guys dragging fat bikes all the way to the summit to ride back down -- that's the winter spirit!
