Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at the plowed end of Kings Hwy 0.1mi east of Four Corners Rd in Springfield. There’s a house nearby so make sure to park such that they have enough room to get up their driveway. You could probably fit two cars here if you were meeting someone. Road in was suitable for 2WD cars.

Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None that I recall.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No blowdowns on roads.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: They might be slipping and sliding around like I was and the short bushwhack to the summit is a little scrambly but many dogs would probably be fine. Be careful around private property.

Comments
Comments: Day 64, Peak 53. 1st hike of the day. Temps throughout the day in Springfield were about 13F. Cloudy and windy. Started at 8:45am.

I started up Kings Hwy. I immediately noticed just how icy the snow was. Some of the worst snow conditions I’ve been in. Very, very crusty. So much so, that the surface was slippery and I eventually put on microspikes. Make sure to stay straight/left onto the narrower Kings Hwy into the woods and not continue up the road as a sign soon indicated that this is private property. It’s easy to do this as both I and others have indicated they have in trail reports. Occasionally, open, wet patches of ground once in the woods. I then came to a jct with a snowmobile trail which I took to the right. It continued to gently ascend as Kings Hwy did. Just beyond where, on Gaia, it shows this snowmobile trail changing from a white/gray road to the usual black dotted line, I turned left and began the short whack to the summit. I would’ve likely turned off a bit sooner but it was a very steep climb to the peak, with lots of boulders/rocks, bordering on being a little scrambly/cliffy.

I made my way steeply up to the summit , all of maybe 0.1mi from the snowmobile trail. I found the jar without too much trouble, signed in, and made my way back down, finding a slightly less steep way down and returned to my car the same way. The hike was 1.5-1.75mi with about 500ft of gain and took me 1hr15min.

301 more days and 312 more peaks to go…
