Finally a bluebird day but colder than a witches tit in a brass bra, but warmed up as the day waned. Ran into a gridder coming off Passa which was his 510. Also met a couple from Durham doing the same loop I did, and a solo hiker from Concord just bagging Whiteface. I bare-booted most of the hike and my pole was unused--this changed once I topped out on Passaconaway. I put on spikes and broke out my pole for the descent down Walden. Crampons would have been a better choice down Walden. The ledge/slab before Whiteface was fun in bare-boots and I doubt spikes or crampons would have helped that much BUT add another 6 inches of snow and crampons will be on most of the time. |
