2†new snow from 1/2 allowed for very easy bareboot/spikes all the way to snowfields on back side of Jefferson. Underneath layer was notable for very thick, slick ice - without the snow would’ve definitely needed crampons just to get up Jewell with the rain/melt/refreeze. Snowfields had crusty punchy snow, micro spikes just for added safety but easy enough to dig in to the surface crust. Lots of exposed rock on summits. Had ice axe for snowfields, snowshoes were just along for the ride, could’ve been helpful in places with deeper drifts (knee deep) but variable terrain made us opt for spikes and infrequent postholes (sorry in advance). One other set of footprints before us to lead the way on fresh snow
Jewell trail it’s named
Diamond in the rough it’s famed
Where the Cog is aimed
Fresh snow over ice
Made bare booting oh so nice
And spikes worth their price
The snow from this week
Make the river ice bridge weak
Foot steps slow and meek
Leave not a post hole
To Mount Jefferson is goal
Bring your hiking pole
Turning on Gulfside
The cairns offer a guide
Beware some may hide
Mount Adams next door
Is worth the trek I implore
With views to pay for
Down the Valley Way
Charming trees above you sway
Will tempt you to stay
