Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Galehead Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Beaver Brook XC Ski Loop, Gale River Loop Road, Gale River Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail, Frost Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, January 2, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I was the only one hiking from Beaver Brook. I started at 8am and the lot was empty with the exception of people trying and failing to use the closed bathroom. If you hike on the XC ski trail, please be respectful and keep to the foot path on the side of the trail. Hiking, and especially bare booting on ski tracks ruins them. I saw a lot of bare boot tracks all over the XC trails, including the trails that don't lead to Gale River Trail.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Skis
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Two water crossings on Gale River Trail where rock hopable.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail's in great shape. There's one high blow down on Gale River Trail that might be annoying once there's a deep snow base.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs today, but this trail is fine for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Saw a few winged creatures playing in the snow.

Comments
Comments: I did this hike alone. Saw 3 other people; a gentleman who hiked over the Twins on Galehead and two solo woman on the Gale River Trail who started at the closed gate. This trail is relatively easy, if not long. It was kind of boney below 3000' but snow shoes are possible for the entire way. I regretted not bringing my skis for the approach to the trailhead. It lightly rained until about noon, which made me question my life decisions, and turned to snow. It was mash potato-y. Probably got a couple inches of fresh snow at elevation and maybe 1/2" down low by the time I finished around 3pm. There was one steep icy section on frost before the outlook, but it had a broken path around it.
