 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Just before the end of the road, there was a plowed spot on the left side of the road that I pulled into. It sort of blocked the gate further up but no tracks by gate so I didn’t think anyone would be tryin to get out of it. Looked like a gate for someone’s private property. Most people park at a large turnaround at the end of the road just beyond where I parked. Not sure if it’s new, but there’s a sign there saying “no parking, private propertyâ€. Between the parking issues and the private property issues (see below) it seems this peak may have some issues… |

Day 62, Peak 52. 2nd hike of the day, following Garnet Hill. Temps in the high 30s I believe when I started and low 40s when I finished. Cloudy but no rain.
There was a track leading up to the right of the gate. Though I figured the gate was likely for someone’s private property, there were no such signs and no house nearby, so I followed the tracks just to the right of the gate and roughly on my bearing into the woods. The track became a snowshoe track and ascended gently/moderately on an old road but I almost immediately came to private property/no trespassing signs. There were many of them, forming a wall ahead of me and to my right. The snowshoe track led right into them. However tempting it was, I bore left off the snowshoe track to the left of the private property signs. There was lots of orange tape here probably denoting another property boundary but no signs so hoping I was in the clear. No more private property signs until the summit area. I ascended S/SE at various grades (generally moderate) through hardwoods with some blowdowns to the summit area. Once attaining the summit area, I came across the snowshoe tract again. The true summit and jar is in the middle/eastern side of the western summit bump.
I signed in and headed down. I followed the snowshoe tracks most the way down this time though. I was a bit worried about coming back into the private property but this actually worked better as when one set of tracks was taking me too far S/W of where I started (unlikely to meet back up with snowshoe tracks I found at the beginning of my hike), I cut right back in the direction I started and came out just below my car in the area where most people seem to park for this one, but, as described above, now has a no parking sign.
The hike was just over a mile round trip with about 400ft of gain taking me about 50min. 303 more days and 313 more peaks to go… |
