| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I parked on the trailhead side. The lot was mostly plowed. At 6:30am there were only about 10 vehicles. At 3:00 the lot was 1/3 full. On the way home I noted many cars in the Lafayette Campground lot. |

The trail was well packed and not a post hole to be seen. The snow was deep enough to cover most rocks and roots. It made for a very pleasurable hike. The only dicey spot was about 2.5 miles in on the Old Bridle Path. There is a steep rocky and icy section. About half way up this section I wished I had switched from my micro spikes to crampons. You could see where others had slipped. Once beyond this small section the remainder of the Old Bridle Path was a beautiful hike through the marshmallow pines to the Greenleaf Hut. The deck of the hut was clear and a good spot to take a break and put a fresh base layer. The final mile on the Greenleaf Trail to the peak of Lafayette was also well packed with spectacular views. The summit was snow covered and packed snow. There was minimal ice. I descended the same route. I did switch to crampons for the one steep icy section on the Old Bridle Path. I felt much more comfortable with the crampons in place of the micro spikes and got to practice with them for a short while. The rest of the hike out was fast on the packed trail. |
