Comments
Comments: 6:00 am started down the logging road / XC ski trail because the trailhead was directly next to where we parked and thought we would just use this route to intersect with Greeley Pond Trail. Do not do this unless you want to get wet. The iced over marshy area was not stable and we sank. Muddy stinky water up to our knees. We aborted that mission to start over. After making our way back to the car, we road walked to the Greeley Pond Trailhead.
The trail was well packed and perfect for snowshoes until after the junction where I choose to change into my K10 crampons and my partner continued in snowshoes.
Quite steep and sketchy in some spots on the way up East Osceola. Fortunately there had not been a lot of butt sledding at this time because it would have made this much harder.
My partner changed from snowshoes to microspikes after EO summit and I I remained in the crampons. There were small drifts that didn’t call for a change back to snowshoes.
We went up the chimney bypass which was well broken out unlike the chimney which (thankfully) had not been used in awhile.
Empty summit of Osceola, no wind but we were mostly socked in with fleeting views.
It didn’t look like anyone had been on the Tripoli Rd side since the snow.
Saw lots of hikers on the way out. The steep sections had many more rocks exposed by this point which made it easy to navigate safely down - staying in the powdery snow and avoiding the rocks and ice.
Great day on the peaks.
