Comments
Comments: This was an ideal winter hiking day in the Northern Presi. Sunny, temps in the 20s, and virtually no wind. There was a beautiful undercast in the lower valley towards Crawford Noth.

The Ammo trail was mostly packed with loose powder from recent snow showers. Two ledges before the cascades were heavy with ice. Could get around most of it with the aid of micro spikes. Otherwise, good footing all the way to LOC.

There was also one steep ledge on the Mt Monroe trail that was a bit difficult. Snow covered ice. Unfortunately, some descending chose to slide down this ledge, which made matters worst. We made it work with micro spikes but crampons would have been easier.

Crawford Path to Mt Washington was in good condition, loosely packed, with most of the rocks covered.

The descent along the Cog railway had numerous mid-calf drifts. in this upper section, the snow didn't always cover the cover the rocks, so we didn't try the snowshoes. Because of the loose nature of the snow, with each step (wore micro spikes) we slide a bit. Nothing out of control, trekking poles were a big help.

5 hrs moving time, 6 1/2 hrs total (includes 2 bathroom breaks at the station, lunch break, water breaks, and lots of time to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
