Comments
Comments: It was a great weather day in the mountains, with temperatures in the mid-20s and very light winds on the summits. The skies started out clear but high thin clouds moved in by the time I arrived on the summit. The trail conditions consisted of old, partially consolidated snow with 2-3 inches of new snow on top. Underneath all that was patchy black ice that increased with altitude. None of the layers of this layer cake were adhering to each other in any meaningful way, making footing a bit tricky on the steep stuff. There were old tracks in the middle layer of old snow. Total snow depth was below maybe 4 inches at the road increasing to maybe 8 inches up high (more in a few spots where it drifted). The trails were still rather bony and whatever was on your feet got beat up a bit.

All this meant that there was no obvious choice for traction gear, and I saw everything. Some in micro-spikes, some in snowshoes. I wore crampons starting where the trail became steep at around 2600 feet, and kept them on until returning to the car. Crampons did a better job of reaching through the snow to the base layer of ice, and I was happy with my choice on the steep, icy section just below the summit of north peak.

It was still great to be out in the mountain. It was nice meeting and chatting with Laurie and Todd from Connecticut.
