Comments
Comments: The conditions beat us down on today's hike. I'm not going even to admit to what the initial plan was, but after dealing with all the water crossings, soft and sticky snow, and the ice on the top 0.3 mile of Sabbaday, we called it quits after summiting North Tripyramid. That might be it for me for Sabbaday forever, unless someone can convince me otherwise. The biggest issue we had was not foreseeing the amount of snow the mountain got on Sunday. I wore my snowshoes from the Sandwich Range sign to almost the top of the ridge, over the water crossings and through the soft snow. My buddy wore his snowshoes after the difficult water crossings and up to the ridge. I never put mine back on; he put his back on below the steep descent, all through the water crossings. Snow and ice kept balling up under my snowshoes, and I dipped my foot in twice. Luckily I was wearing oven bags in my boots, so my feet stayed (mostly) dry. Changed socks on the ridge. Wore my trail crampons up to N. Tri and then down to the car. I wasn't messing with the water crossings and snowballs in snowshoes again. However, the going was difficult in the soft 2-4". We brought spikes, trail crampons and snowshoes, and I wore all three at some point during the hike. None were perfect, but they got me up and back down again safely to live to tell another tale. That's all I could ask for from today, my goodness.
