There was no perfect traction choice today ... I wore spikes round-trip as snow depths rarely went over the toe of my boots and there were still plenty of exposed rocks. The only real stretch where snowshoes could have been beneficial was between Anna and Mack. Otherwise, there was 2-3 in. of new snow over a solid base. Some ice lurking under the snow in ledge areas. New snow is forecast for tonight so that should improve conditions.
No one had been on Red Trail between the camp and Old Stage Rd., or on that same trail between Anna and Mack. Elsewhere was a combo of boot and snowshoe traffic.
I was glad to have snow instead of ice on the steep rockfall section of Mack Ridge Trail as it's a "sporty" descent (Mack Ridge Trail also has a deceiving amount of climbing in the southbound direction that doesn't register on topo maps).
A group of six passed me on Mack Ridge Trail, but that was it for other humans all day. Pretty quiet out this way. |
