Lots of hikers out taking advantage of a beautiful windless day! The snow was not deep at all but there was plenty to cover the trail. Some rocks are still poking out and there was mud visible at the lower elevations. Snowshoes would only get in the way (until we get more snow of course). Wore microspikes the whole time and had no real trouble. The spur to the Avalon summit is VERY icy and there are a few patches of ice concealed along the Avalon trail under the snow. Careful footwork and some judicious butt-sliding were necessary on the way down. Beautiful views of an undercast Mount Washington from Field. The trail between Willey and Field was especially stunning, looking towards Carrigain. Made it up and back in exactly 5 hours. Thanks to those who left trail conditions reports from over the weekend! Really helped me plan a great day in the mountains. |
