Sharp spikes are the bare minimum, crampons strongly improve the enjoyment of the mountain, snowshoes are deadweight until we get another foot of snow. Barebooted up to the gem pool then wore crampons to the summit and back to the car. Coulda swapped to spikes at the junction with Ammo link but was feeling lazy so didn't. Was hoping to go over Washington and down Jewel but the visibility went to nothing as we summited Monroe so we went back down and then got mocked by the mountain as it cleared after we had descended past the gem pool. I would strongly recommend not being on this trail or trails with steep ledges like this until we get a foot of snow if u don't have crampons. It was legit tricky mountaineering moves to go down the ledges and I would recommend not descending trails of this grade until we get a foot of snow if you don't understand how to use or don't have crampons due to lack of snowcover and exposed icy ledges, roots, rocks. I expect the snow over the next couple days won't significantly change trail conditions and might be a similar layer of poorly bonded powder as the previous snow event last weekend. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays |
