All of these trails had seen foot traffic with choppy boot prints almost the whole way. I started out in spikes but soon took them off as there was still a lot of exposed rock and ledge heading up to North Peak, and the crunchy snow pack provided good grip. There was some ice around but most of it was avoidable. The iciest stretch was coming down South Ridge Trail southwest of South Peak. I almost put the spikes back on here but was ok with mindful stepping. Snow depths were minimal everywhere and the snowpack was fairly well-frozen.
Great views, plenty of boulders (thank you volcano), and nice pond scenery on this long clockwise loop around the park. Clear morning skies gave way to clouds in the afternoon. Cold and windy, but these trails and the terrain itself both offer good protection. |
