What a great day for this winter solstice hike. Summitted Carter Dome in the Fall and the rest in the Winter which started at 10:59. The partly cloudy sky totally cleared around 1:30 making for some great views of the Prezies and others. It was a balmy 32 degrees at 7:30 and 27 degrees at the finish, 3:45. A breezy start as 20 mph winds cut through the trees a bit for the climb to the second junction. The winds did calm to virtually nothing on the summit of Carter Dome and for the rest of the hike. 19MB was mix of bare, wet trail and rock and hard packed and soft snow. The upper trails were 2 to 3 inches of soft snow from the second jct to about a mile past the North Carter Trail - Imp junction. I wore Hillsounds from start to finish except for the road walk. There were a few sketchy icy areas from South to Middle but existing boot tracks, soft snow, tree grabbing and caution made them very manageable. The bottom of Imp trail was still soft snow which was getting sticky. |
