| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
A reminder: the Cog folks want hikers to park in the designated hiker parking lot, and pay the fee. I for one, don't want to lose access to these shortened versions of the Jewel/Ammo trails. |

| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
Crossing on the icy log was okay with spikes and poles for balance, on the brook crossing from the Cog parking lot. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A few trees down on the Jewel, but some have mini herd paths, or you can get over/under them. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw a couple of dogs on the Jewel. Neither seemed worse for the wear. |

| Comments: |
Another epic hike with the Old Man and the Saw. The Jewel trail had surprisingly little ice, with just pockets, then progressively more snow, to provide good traction. Once above tree line, again, little ice, with pockets of blown snow, which was hard in the AM, not so much in the PM.
Gulfside to Jeff via Jeff loop was pretty much the same. I never used spikes until that last water crossing mentioned above. We bypassed the water crossing in the AM by going up the Cog aways, and then cutting back onto the Jewel.
Probably all these conditions will change drastically (again) by today!
A hearty thank you to Eric, Liam, and Bree (apologies if I spelled any names wrong!) for providing an added support crew to the end of a very long day. The hiking community's (it's a small world!) generosity continues to amaze. |
