There are varied surface conditions on this trail. At first, there is a thin layer of ice intermixed with some leaf and soil (best to use beat up microspikes). Once the trail enters the evergreen forest (hemlock, white pine, and red pine) the ground is mostly needles with very little ice (can be bare booted). The ledges are a mix of ice and bare rock where traction is advised. Above the ledges, the path is mostly a "river" of ice that requires sharp traction. There are some rocks and roots protruding above the ice that facilitates the footing. The unabated ice flow on the trail convinced me to bushwhack off the upper portion of the trail. The terrain surrounding the path was mostly bare ground with patches of thin snow and occasional spots of ice that were easily avoided. I used the trail crampons for the descent over the ice.
A bit windy at higher elevation. New floor in the fire tower. Another hiker said it was installed in Sept. Two hikers that overnighted at the tower on Sunday night rolled up the mat because it retained moisture that was dampening the new floor. A group of young hikers were staying in the tower tonight. Good views from the tower. Please remove traction when ascending the stairs to preserve the wood. |
