Lots of ice, spikes from start to finish. Sharp spikes are a good idea - leave the rock spikes at home.
Lots of water on the Isolation Trail until you start to gain some elevation. Definitely no need for snowshoes; hip waders maybe, but definitely not snowshoes.
Best segment of trail today was the Davis Path. Easy peasy with some packed snow and solid ice.
Super windy at the summit. I could barely stand up. Didn't stay long, but the views were excellent.
On the topic of the Engine Hill Bushwhack. Basically, if you haven't done it before, or you're not comfortable navigating off trail, you may want to press pause and avoid it until there's been a decent snowfall and a snowshoe track has been set. I took a high line, turning immediately uphill at the first marshy area until gaining a bit of elevation, then it was a relatively straight shot to the Isolation Trail. I didn't really try to follow any tracks, but I did periodically overlap or cross other's tracks. |
