Comments
Comments: Only one car in Livermore Rd lot at 7am this morning. A bit windy and chilly, about 28F but colder thanks to the wind. We all walked the Livermore Road for a few minutes and immediately put on microspikes. There was boiler plate ice on most of Livermore road. A few long stretches of plain old dirt helped to dull the spikes. We took them off at this point and kept them off about half a mile up Livermore trail when we put them back on. We left them on all the way up to Scaur ridge trail as we encountered flowing blue ice. A few of our group switched to heavy duty Hillsound spikes with sharp traction through to Pine Bend Brook trail. It was very steep and icy here and almost called for crampons. The summit of North Tripyramid was windy and cold, still very little snow up here. No snowshoes needed. Clear views of Waterville Valley Ski area. We continued to Middle Tripyramid. Middle was also a bit windy and we had clear views of Mt. Washington with one little cloud covering the summit buildings and antennas. We turned around at Middle getting both 4000+ft summits and went back the way we came in. Again, extremely icy with flow ice as hard as a diamond. Going down the ice was tricky and sharp spikes are highly recommended until you get off Scaur Ridge trail. Weather all around was good, the wind on summits was a bit uncomfortable, but no goggles needed. We got back to the parking lot at 2:30p and the temps were at 35F with warm sun.
