The little brook crossings, at the beginning of the trail, are partially iced over. Stepping carefully I had no trouble crossing. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A really large tree came down, fully obstructing the trail, approximately 50’ from the ledge/summit view area. There is a fairly new-appearing work around on the north side of it (left side as you are headed up) but it’s actually kind of hard to see so I bushwhacked around the south side headed up. I took a lot of photos - email me if you would like them. (My name at yahoo). Interestingly it was the tree with the “Crawford Notch State Park†sign attached to it.
The most recent trail report was the end of November and this was not mentioned. |

I only had a smidgen of time so this was a great choice. I like this route better in the winter because the footing is marvelous. My beaten up microspikes were absolutely perfect today. It does appear that a creative person snowboarded down the trail very, very recently - the track was fresh and uninterrupted and there were no footprints on it. Wowza!
Even though it was actively snowing the whole time, I was hoping that the sun would break through the clouds and provide some sunrise color, but the whole hike was an Ansel Adams photo.
Which was, of course, fabulous!! |
