Comments
Comments: Minimal covering of snow with the cover progressively deepening with elevation up to only an inch or two. Minor drifts on the open ledges on Carter-Moriah Trail that are easily avoidable. The microspikes worked well on the steep ledges. The steep rocky trail between the junction with the Kenduskeag Trail and the summit requires care in ascending as there is ice beneath the snow. On descent I found I was not getting adequate traction in this section. So, I opted to explore the bushwhack route through the woods mentioned in the White Mtn Guide to get down to the Carter-Moriah Trail. I backtracked up the trail to a spot just below the summit and skirted the summit ledge area on the west side where I found moderate grades. The spruce/fir were dense in places but I burrowed through the brush without a scratch.
No hikers have used the Kenduskeag Trail, Moriah Gorge Trail, or Carter-Moriah south of the junction with the Stony Brook Trail since the last snowfall.
The cairns on the Carter-Moriah Trail usually mark the pathway on the open ledges or at points where the trail turns.
The only other hiker on the Stony Brook approach was a man from Dover NH. At the summit there were two women from the North Shore and Portland ME.
There were limited views due to the clouds. The clearest views were of the Wild River and Evans Notch regions.
