Comments
Comments: A FINE day to be out. The first truly cold day so far this season, a great way to test out winter gear. The trees have donned their winter coats finally. Through most of the trail, it looked as if it was a sticky wet snow last night before it switched over to fluffy stuff. It was slushy underneath until about 3600 where blue ice appears under the snow. Depths ranging from 2 inches down low to about 6 up high. Not enough snow for snowshoes at this time, far too boney. A few drifts closer to the summit at my knee, but you had to try and find those. Just below the ledges, we suited up for battle. The wind was truly howling above our heads. At the time we summited, MWOBS had Wash @ 80 sustained (obviously not saying this was the wind 2200ft lower). I would say the wind was about 25-30 with a couple gusts that knocked us around. It was the strongest winds I have been in in a long time. Definately no nonsese above timber. MWOBS mesonet info had 4k @ 11 above at this time, with these winds, absolutely below freezing. Plenty of traffic today despite the weather, with several parties that had turned back.
