If you haven't hiked Greenleaf Trail before, be ready for 2.5 miles of rocks...stepping on rocks, over rocks and in between rocks. Don't get me wrong. It's the Whites and it is to be expected. After 2 feet of snow, it will be much easier.
There's a snow storm coming in tonight with 6-8 inches of new snow. Here's the conditions we had. First mile, a trace of snow, leaves mostly matted down with a few wet spots. After Eagle Pass, 2-3 inches of snow, easy to bare boot. The upper section before the Hut had significant ice running down thru the center of the trail. Did not use micro spikes on this section, easy to get around. At the hut we put on Micro spikes and kept them on until be returned to Eagle Pass. There were a few icy spots dropping down into the col after leaving the hut. The snow base was packed down by wind and foot traffic for most of the way to the summit with a few areas with 4-6 inches of loose powder.
We had checked the summit forecast before heading out. It called for partly sunny skies, winds at 10 mph, and a summit temp of 37 degrees. What we got instead was mostly cloudy skies, sustained winds of 20+mph, and temps well below freezing. It was very cold on ridge. Be ready for changing conditions and altering your plans. |
