Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, November 20, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Gale River Road is still open. I was a bit surprised to find 10 cars in the lot at 0730. I was not surprised to find a couple dozen when I returned early afternoon.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings in the morning were sketchy with water running just high enough and rocks just slick enough. I got over OK but twice dunked a foot. I did the snomo-whack on the way out and it was a much better choice.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No major issues to report but the banks on some stretches of trail are taking a beating from people trying to avoid running water and mud.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a few today.
Bugs
Bugs: None.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: Shoulder season conditions throughout: fallen leaves down low with intermittent stretches of mud, running water, minor snow and spotty ice all the way. The snow depth was only a couple of inches at the highest elevations. I was able to bare boot to the junction and decided to throw a pair of rock spikes on ascending Garfield Ridge Trail to the summit and left them on until about half way back on the return trip - they were overkill in some areas but very helpful in others.

On the plus side it was another stellar day with blue skies, abundant sun, distant views and near zero wind while I was at the top. I stayed at the summit for at least a half hour taking pics and having an early lunch. Mt. Garfield is my favorite peak and today was a good reminder why.
