Comments
Comments: Early shoulder season conditions here. Leaves are covering Carter Gibbs Trail and portions of Elwell and Moglis Trail. Trace snow on top of that started ~ 1600' and transitioned to mostly full coverage a couple hundred feet higher and pretty much stayed that way until I got to Mowglis Road except for some "softer" stretches on the ridgeline. Even though there was only 1-1.5 inches of wet snow it was a PITA as it led to slicker conditions over the already slippery leaves, roots and rocks. Spikes would have been useless. As the morning progressed it became very drippy from the snow melting off the trees. Another note: higher up on the Carter-Gibbs Trail is was a little tough to stay on the trail in a couple of spots since the leaves were covering the footbed and the north-facing blazes were covered with snow. The top mile or so of Mowglis Road is a wet, muddy, rocky, rutted mess - mercifully this eventually turns into more of a hardened forest road descending.

Despite the conditions this area is a fun one to explore and has a very remote feel to it. I guess that feeling was confirmed since I didn't see another soul all day. Very comfy temps today as well. On descent I visited some nice cascades within the Kimball Hill WMA and when I got back to the lot I took a peek at the Sculptured Rocks across the street...very cool!
