Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: This section of Moat Mtn. Trail has been getting a lot of love from USFS/WMTC this year, with up to two dozen relocations planned, most of which are very small. A few larger ones are finished and open now. The two most significant at present are the one around the former left turn off the logging road, which now continues ahead and switchbacks up at easier grades, and the one at the base of the talus slope, which angles up to the right and around the rocks, replacing the former steep and eroded direct route. These new relos are not yet blazed but just follow the flags. Lots of new log steps have also been installed on the lower logging road section. Unfortunately, it also looks like some illegal blazing has been done on ledges with spray paint, mainly above the Chocorua outlook. :( The upper section of the trail has some significant erosion in places.

Comments: What a stunner of a day for these peaks!

Surprisingly, things were mainly dry until the large open ledge area around 2.0 mi. up, which is where the mountain was shedding the recent rains. Lots of wet ledges and one area where water was flowing right across them in the form of a small stream. Up higher everything was dry again. The relocations are brand new and need some more foot traffic; I'm curious how they will wear in. With temps around freezing last night and early this morning, I carried rock spikes just in case but there was zero ice anywhere.

My main objective was South Moat but with the incredible clear weather I continued on to Middle and wandered around the broad ledges over there taking in the views.

Bright sun and cool temps today; perfect fall hiking weather. Only saw a few other people out.
