Comments: (While the majority of this route is in Gilsum, the pond itself is just over the town line in Surry.)

Nice loop of about 5.0 mi. through TNC's new Surry Mtn. Preserve. Red Trail mostly follows old woods roads which were mainly dry but did have some stretches of mud and water. The trail ends at secluded Lily Pond, a pretty little spot.

On the return trip I looped back via Yellow Trail which is a hiking trail proper, though difficult to follow in some spots as the footbed is not well worn, leaves are down, and the woods are very open (I wandered off it once). This trail climbs over the summit of "428", which is shown on the USGS as being south of the main summit of Surry Mtn. and the pond. On top of this wooded bump are some ginormous 7 ft. cairns; impressive work! This brought me back to Red Trail for an easy walk out.

No big views here, but the woods are pleasant and the pond is a nice destination.
