Comments
Comments: I finished the day by completing my redlining of Yellow Trail and Gates Brook Trail. Austin Brook Trail is wide and clear up to the junction with Yellow Trail - the logging on the upper part of the trail hasn't impacted the lower part. Yellow Trail was mostly a moderate climb up to Mt. Crag. It had the standard fare of rocks and roots for a White Mountains trail - it just seemed rough since the trails I had hiked that morning, in the vicinity of the Philbrook Farm Inn, were smoother. The summit of Mt. Crag features a wide view - Shelburne Moriah is directly in front, while the Presidentials were somewhat visible off to the side. The descent off the other side of Mt. Crag was steep but not difficult - it's actually fairly smooth for such a steep section. Gates Brook Trail follows old roads for most of its length - I hiked up to the junction of Middle Mountain Trail to redline that part. There was a little bit of mud in that section, but nothing major or difficult. Then I took Gates Brook Trail back down to North Road (nothing really to report on that section), and walked the road back to my car. This finished off a very successful hiking day in the Mahoosuc area.

I saw only three other hikers, two on the summit of Mt. Crag and one while climbing up Mt. Crag (he was coming down). These trails are definitely a nice place to hike without seeing very many tourists. The roads, on the other hand...
