Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Swift River (on the Kancamagus end of the Sawyer Pond Trail) was a thigh-deep wade in both directions. Other crossings were easy rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All trails, including the Sawyer Pond Trail and the Brunel Trail, were relatively easy to follow. Brunel Trail is sparsely blazed, but this may be intentional. Occasional blowdowns (all stepovers) on the Sawyer Pond Trail south of Sawyer Pond.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Wouldn't recommend taking them on the Brunel Trail, due to steep, eroded, and narrow climbs to Owl's Cliff and Mt. Tremont.
Bugs
Bugs: Minimal- never considered using repellent. On the Brunel Trail, shortly after re-entering the woods from Rob Brook Rd., I walked past 2 pieces of flagging tape, and didn't notice until passing the 2nd one that the tape had "BEES" written on it. I'm not sure when this tape was placed; fortunately, there were no bees today!

Comments
Comments: Managed to achieve [relative] solitude despite near-peak fall foliage! My guess is that other hikers weren't particularly excited about fording the Swift River on this 35-degree morning, and I don't really blame them. I didn't see a soul until I emerged from the Mt. Tremont Trail onto Route 302- and then I saw many souls. Views from Owl's Cliff and the Mt. Tremont summit ledges were spectacular, and Sawyer Pond was excellent as well. As above, I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of navigational difficulty on the Brunel Trail. Also, trails were relatively dry, with the exception of a bit of standing water on short sections of the lower Mt. Tremont Trail. 19.6 miles, 3,850' gain, a bit under 6 1/2 hours.
