Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: After being orphaned for a while, I am guessing that Brunel has an adopter now, as it was in great condition. The trail corridor over the shoulder of Owls Cliff is especially impeccable. Good to see this route getting some love. Noted recent axe work near the bottom. Only two small leaners. For a trail with such steep sections, there isn't much erosion. The worst spot is a small washed out pitch south of the Owls Cliff Spur. The old trail signs need updating as some of the distances indicated are wildly off (example: from the Owls Cliff Spur, signage says it's 1.3 mi. to Tremont when it's only 0.6).

Comments: A 10th visit to Tremont but coming up the back side this time.

The 2.6 mi. one-way walk on Rob Brook Rd. is somewhat lengthy but easy -- took me an hour each way. Would be ideal on a bike.

Brunel and the spur to Owls Cliff were very dry. Some gravelly footing on the steeps but not too bad. Also visited the recognized high point on Owls Cliff, which is just a stone's throw from the main trail via a pretty good herd path. The final 0.3 mi. up to Tremont is the toughest part of this hike -- an unrelenting steep climb. The summit of Tremont would be where I encountered the only two people I saw all day, who came up Mt. Tremont Trail.

Foliage was still mainly green but there are some reds and yellows beginning to pop in the valleys below. It will happen fast. There was a notable difference in color along the Kanc between this morning and this afternoon.
