Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails were in great shape. Dry River trail is a true wilderness experience- super wet, rough, and a few overgrown spots; however, it was never hard to follow. Dan took on the task of counting the blowdowns for the entire 9+ mile journey on the DRT. He ended up with a grand total of 126. When I asked him what his qualifications were to count a tree as a blowdown he mumbled something about a complex algorithm and that it was beyond my scope of comprehension. He's a scientist so obviously that makes him always correct and extremely trustworthy (see current events for other examples of trustworthy scientists)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: this hike is not for most dogs but Fin is an old badass bitch who once again out-hiked her humans. Saw two dogs at LOC and two dogs way down low on Dry River. Unfortunately we had a rare encounter with a feisty dog and a wretched POS owner. 3 miles from end of hike a collie mix with hiking saddlebags ran up on us with the owner 100-200' behind. The dog started aggressively yipping in Fin's face and lunging at her rear. Fin went full defense mode and was snapping/showing fangs in response. Dog wouldn't leave us alone and owner was doing nothing. I had to get between them and use my trekking pole to keep the dog at bay and avoid a fight. The owner finally showed up and just had a sh*t eating grin on his face like it was a funny situation. I hurled some expletives at him and told him his dog was about to get wrecked if he didn't control it. I was 2 seconds away from whipping it with my trekking pole or spraying it with the jerk sauce (pepper spray). I told Fin next time something like that happens to rip an ear off, but she just licked my hand and farted the entire car road home, so I will likely have to continue fighting her battles for her. Despite her tough appearance she is a real sweet old gal.

Comments: What a gem of a day for an Ammo-Dry River traverse with a little extra redlining errr i mean tracing and doodling errr i mean non-offensive generic bipedal human mountain walking. We passed about 75 people going up Ammo. It was a bit windy but gorgeous up high so we hit Tucks Crossover/Davis/Camel and didn't see anyone until we got back to LOC. Saw a total of 9 people the rest of the day. The Oakes Gulf headwall is an awesome spot and was way tamer than I expected, albeit still wet and rough. Encountered tons of mud pits and blowdowns on way to Shelter #3. Hit up the two sidepaths at top and bottom of Dry River Falls, which is officially my new favorite swimming hole. Incredible little spot way out in middle of nowhere. After passing the Iso intersection you could really start to see the Irene damage which was pretty neat. The relocations have some short, steep up and downs but nothing bad. .5 miles from trailhead just before you leave the river and wilderness there is an incredible swimming area with a huge pool nearly 10' deep (where we encountered 4 of the 9 hikers we saw on DRT). A fine day to abandon your wife and kids in pursuit of majestic mountain miles
