Date of Hike: Thursday, July 29, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked in the first space I saw, in the overflow lot, but in fact there were plenty of spaces even in the main lot at the end of Zealand Rd.(right at the trailhead) on a Thursday morning at about 10 a.m.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: many small stream crossings on A-Z Trail, all were easy but might be problematical with higher water
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The section of A-Z Trail west of the Willey Range Trail seems to have been beautifully engineered, but portions are now very muddy and becoming overgrown.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This should be an easy route for a dog accustomed to climbing, but I saw only two dogs, both at the summit of Field. Both seemed happy.
Bugs
Bugs: no issues

Comments
Comments: Apologies for posting this two weeks late, but I thought it might be helpful to report on this rarely followed route to the Willey Range, including the "Z" end of the A to Z Trail. This is a little longer than the usual route from Crawford Notch, but the Zealand Trail is mostly flat, so the extra 2.5 miles each way don't feel like a lot. I went up only Field, but it would be easy enough first to take the spur up Mt. Tom, then extend the trip on the Willey Range Trail to Mt. Willey. The portion of the A-Z Trail between Zealand and Willey Range doesn't get much use, and although not spectacular it is for the most part a pleasant trail and not very difficult, unless you count hopping to avoid mud in a few places and a few short but steep climbs. I met only two people on it, NOBO through-hikers who were taking the detour around Ethan Pond in order to reach the AMC lodge near the east end of the trail.
