 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
access road off of route 16 is about .2 miles long and is single lane. there are enormous potholes near beginning that are unavoidable so go very slow!!! |
 | Surface Conditions: |
Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
 | Recommended Equipment: |
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
low and slow and big ones had bridges |
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
trail in great shape. a few recent blowdowns have been managed. easy to zig zag off trail in a few spots high up on ridge. Pay close attention to cairns/faded yellow blazes and it is no problem. |
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
you are going to want to have a fit, experienced dog that is comfortable hopping up and down boulders/rock slabs. None of the scrambles are that difficult but small or out of shape dogs would need several boosts up and down. There was abundant water up until Penacook shelter water source. Fin did great despite being run ragged on Tuesday in Evans Notch:) |
 | Bugs: |
tons of mosquitoes the first .5 miles from trailhead on both ascent and descent, but nowhere to be seen above that |

very hot and muggy day redlining Piper and Penacook Spur with the dog and kiddo. Trail is super mellow old roads for several miles. Then you hit numerous steeper switchbacks that have lots of nice rock steps. Once you hit the first real views the last mile+ is very ledgey and scrambley, but never super steep or sketchy. There were lots of wet rocks from recent rains but all ledges had enough dry area to avoid wet slabs. Camp Penacook Spur is a pain in the butt if you are hiking it just to check it out-steeper than main trail and seems like a long .2 miles! The spur trail to the brook, which was flowing strong, is just to the left of the shelter as you approach it. About 60 second flat walk to the water. We chatted with a large group from the Legionares of Christ who were camping there. Margaret and I shared the summit with a group of three friendly hikers and one trail runner. 4.5 hours up and 2 hours down, because once Margaret becomes delirious with fatigue and sugar she insists on running the bottom half of the mountain back to the car. Lots of friendly hikers out today who were surprised to see a three year old hiking Chocorua and offered lots of encouragement, which is always appreciated:) |
