Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Middle Sugarloaf, North Sugarloaf, NH
Trails
Trails: Sugarloaf Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, July 6, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: When we arrived shortly past noon there were a few open spots directly at the trailhead (not room for many more than a half dozen cars there...maybe 8?) but it looked as if it had already overflowed earlier as there were some cars parallel parked opposite the trailhead as well. Note that this trailhead very easily overflows on nice summer days, especially on the weekend. The road in is bumpy and mostly dirt but safe for any car.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None but there’s a big one that usually requires wading if you do the Trestle Trail loop nearby.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No blowdowns as far as I recall and the trail is very well travelled and easy to follow with frequent yellow blazes. Only place where the blazing is faded is along the ledges/view spurs. The sign at the T-jct is old and in reality it’s more like 0.5mi to the summit of Middle Sugsrloaf.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I don’t believe we saw any but a probably a good hike for dogs other than the ladder on Middle Sugarloaf; if with a dog, you may only way to go to North Sugarloaf.
Bugs
Bugs: Barely none to speak of. Yay!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Co-lead a trip to the Sugarloafs. Group split and a couple of us including myself waited for others at the T-jct while they did Middle Sugarloaf so I can’t speak to conditions there but the trail seemed to be in good shape although of course depending on how much rain we get things could change quickly!

I’d only done this hike once before so it was nice to do it again even if the views were only partial due to low clouds. On the bright side, we didn’t get rained on! Things were still very humor though which led to some wet(ish) rock/root although nothing too slick. The trail was mostly dry but there were some spots of mud you wouldn’t want to step in...at least not with trail runners.
