Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, July 7, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I found a spot on McDuffee Road, it looked like at best a semi official parking spot. Room for one or two cars.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: none because of lack of rain, different story if there had been normal rain because in some small areas it looks like you are hiking up a stream bed
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I am not sure this is even an official trail - basically the entire trail is overgrown and in some spots difficult to follow. If someone had not marked trees with yellow paint and occasional surveyor's tape I would have turned around. Right near the top of the trail without a compass, map and sharp eyes looking for surveyor's tape you will have a problem
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I am not sure I would take a dog on this trail because it really isn't much of a trail.
Bugs
Bugs: surprisingly they stayed away from me - I had used bug spray.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: nothing

Comments
Comments: I found this trail on the Trail Bandits map of the Ossipee Mountains. You drive down Canaan Road from Rt. 171 and then turn left on McDuffee Road. As stated above this may no longer be an official trail because it shows no evidence of maintenance or recent hiking. Totally overgrown in some areas. Someone has done a good job with putting yellow paint on trees but occasionally that is hard to follow especially near the top. Also the paint doesn't really start until you are done walking on McDuffee Road. Wear long pants, take a compass, know how to use it and study the map in detail. The map is accurate and the compass gave me the confidence to keep going. This hike was a good workout but I won't be doing it again. My concentration was so sapped by staying on the trail that I didn't really pay much attention once I got to the top of Shaw (the last 7/10ths of a mile to the summit of Shaw are on real trails and were pleasant to hike.
