Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at Roaring Brook. Baxter isn't the kind of park where you can pull up without a reservation and expect to be admitted. If you're not staying in the park you will need to get a parking pass. Go to the park's website for more details. We stayed at one of the park's campgrounds and didn't need to wait in line at the gatehouse.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing of note.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I don't recall seeing any blowdowns. Blazes could use some updating on both Saddle and Hamlin Basin Trails.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sparkey and Fido are not welcome at Baxter. Again, consult the park's website.
Bugs
Bugs: Plenty in the parking lot and the lower sections of Chimney Pond Trail, both at 7:30 am and at 6:00 pm.

Comments
Comments: A beautiful sunny day with high winds on the ridge. We helped a friend celebrate finishing his NE67! At Chimney Pond there's water available (bring your filter!) a restroom, and a ranger to answer questions. Hamlin Ridge Trail is quite the descent and makes Caps Ridge look like a bunny slope. One of the nicer points of there being limited access to Baxter is that there weren't very many other hikers around.
